FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions
Yurts look complicated, are they easy to set up?
Yurts are very simple to set up, one person can do it pretty easily. As you get better you should be able to put one up in 30-45 mins. The key is to make a circle on the ground first to put the wall on. With the wall in a perfect circle, you shouldn’t have any problems.
Can you live in your yurts?
My yurts are not really designed for year round living as they are not engineered for snow load etc, they are designed to be lightweight and portable. That said people are living in my yurts. In wet climates though it would be best to add a waterproof layer over the canvas and in winter add an insulating layer.
Can you really load one on the top of a car?
Yes it’s surprising how small a yurt will pack down. On a 16ft yurt, the wall breaks down into two 72″x 26″ sections and the roof poles are 8ft. Everything else just comes apart. The Roof Wheel and canvas I normally put inside the car, but they too can go on the roof easily. A 20ft yurt easily loads on the roof of my Durango SUV.
Do you offer discounts on quantity?
Yes, I can give 10% off. Please contact me if you want to order several.
How many people can sleep in a yurt?
That really depends on how much room you need. I use a 16ft yurt when I go camping, That is easily enough for a queen bed and 3 full size cots for the kids, plus all our gear – and there is plenty of room left over.
Is it safe to have a stove in a yurt?
You must always be very careful when you have a fire or wood stove in a yurt or tent. You must make sure you keep the stove away from the side wall and route the stove pipe out through the middle of roof wheel. A spark arrester is essential as you don’t want embers landing on your canvas. We hope to offer fireproof canvas soon.
Do you rent yurts?
Yes I do. I have rented mostly to events and festivals either as back stage entertaining or as luxury accommodation. I also rent tepees now. I can rent for parties, weddings and special events, but due to the travelling and set up, it can get expensive for just one or two yurts.
What care and maintenance must I do?
It really depends on how much use it gets. The wood roof poles and lattice wall will need to oiled with boiled linseed oil every few years. The canvas should be brushed off after every use and if left out in the rain, make sure it is clean and dry before packing away.
What do I cover the roof ring with?
When I go camping I usually just use an umbrella. For more permanent settings, like in the back yard for accommodation etc, we now sell a clear polycarbonate dome.
